re:acrobat reader

when i try to   tar xvf  /mnt/cdrom/ebooks/acroread.tar...
i get a message that says that this is not a tar file, and it quits.
i'm a newbie and need those ebooks.
please help.
i am running linux 5.0 from a boxed package with the two cd's.
