It would help to optimise what you can; use hdparm to optimise the hard
disks (you can manually edit the /etc/sysconfig/harddisks file to
accomplish some of that task) as well as turn off any unwanted/unused
services that may be running in the background.

One some systems - depending on their motherboard/IDE controller, I've
been able to successfully pass kernel parameters in the /etc/lilo.conf
to assist in speeding up the IDE bus speed and throughput.
