Another old issue that's still unresolved:

Red Hat Linux used to include a utility called "fixperm" that could be used to make sure that spool directores etc. had correct owner, group and mode bits so that all system services would run properly. The tool was a part of "linuxconf", and I was using it during the initial config of all new machines because we are using slightly non-standard uids for some of the system users (this has to do with the fact that we are sharing info with other Unixes.) Not that linuxconf is gone from the dist, this valuable tool is gone. Is there a replacement? And before anyone suggests it: "rpm --setperms" or similar is NOT what I want. (It takes far to long to do this on all packages and I'm not even sure it does the right thing in my case.)
