I rather remember this particular ramble emanating from my own fingers
about six or eight months ago - directly after purchasing and installing
RH 8.0; I found that everything beyond RH 7.3 was not viable for a
client's desktop as there was way too much configuration, tweaking,
reinstalling of this'n'that - just wasn't worth the time or the effort;
and for my own desktop, I certainly wasn't going to take valuable time
out to muck around. I moved to Mandrake for a desktop distro - and
haven't budged since - heaps more options for customisation and
configurations, and although Mandrake has also tried to marry Gnome and
KDE, at least it's easier to break out of it and just "do it your way".

I still install RH on my clients' servers - I believe and have always
believed that RH was great for servers and won't budge on that note, but
a "desktop" is a different critter altogether, and I've had much more
satisfaction from my customers with the MDK for the desktop - speed is a
definite issue at all times when you're talking about a desktop.

The glitz and glamour sucks as well => eye candy.

XFCE3 and XFCE4, WindowMaker, ROX, even Enlightenment run rings around
KDE and Gnome2, and I certainly don't like having a company shove a
windowmanager/desktop down my throat as much as it's done in RH
nowadays.

(And in actuality, I still like using Olvwm - just because...)
