i got that error when i installed rh9 and brought forward my stuff from
rh7.3.  turned out my /etc/profile didn't do anything if HOME wasn't
set, but under rh9, even if HOME isn't set, /etc/profile needs to do
whatever, or prefdm conks.  ymmv.
