Well, the Ethernet-HOWTO is typically used to configure your ethernet
card. If you already have that done, your time would be better off spent
initially reading other documents.
You should also check out the Linux Networking Guide, available in HTML
and postscript, from the LDP.

Certainly don't take the topic lightly, but don't make it harder than it
has to be. What specifically are you looking to configure?
Do you have normal dialup working properly? Have you read the PPP-HOWTO?
Once you get your basic networking configured, you can pretty much read
any UNIX book on the topic your interested in, and you should be ok. For
example, see the O'Reilly books for general UNIX topics such as sendmail
or DNS.
