hallo,

I've recently inherited a 486 PC vintage 1991 with an Adaptec
AHA154x SCSI adapter. I decided to use it as a try out for Redhat
5.0. Installation went very well. As a beginner it's the only thing I
think I've managed to master!! It is however very, very slow.
Checking through the Adaptec home page I see that the drivers have
been updated as recently as 1996. I downloaded the relevant ones. Now
my problems -as I said I'm a beginner.

1. I downloaded onto DOS formatted disks. How do I get the stuff
into the computer? How do I activate these drivers?
2. can it be expected to bring any performance improvement?
3 As I saw during installation Linux doesn't seem to bother much
about what drivers are installed. How can I make sure that it
"gets"my new ones?

Hope that that isn't too much at once and someone can help.

In advance, thanks.

This leads me on to the v#broader questionof whether I can expect to,
and if so how I can squeeze a little bit of performance from this old
box. It only has ISA slots!!
Please confirm receipt.

Yours Faithfully,

Gordon Filby
