Hello all,

I recently upgraded to RH4.2 and have been having problems using my modem
while running X. I had been using RH2.0 (I think; 2.x anyway), under which
my modem (USR Sportser 14400) worked fine - never a problem. Now, I can
operate it when on the console no problem, but the port seems to hang up
completely under X. Symptoms;

a) I connect to my ISP on the console, and run a continual ping to some
machine. I can see the rx/tx lights flashing on the modem. I switch to
another virtual console and run X (SVGA, CL542x server) and as soon as the
screen blanks (after the config details scroll up the screen) the ping
hangs; the line is still up, but there's no activity through the modem,
and my ping command on the console is acting like the plug's been pulled.

b) I log in and run startx. I open an xterm and run my dialup command,
which fails to initialise the modem. Nothing.

In both case, exiting the xserver and attempting to run the dialup script
from the console again results in a `failed to initialise modem' error and
I have to reboot to get the thing to respond again. Even worse, very
occasionally it will actually work with the xserver running, but this
seems to be completely random and irreproducible. setserial displays the
exact same info before and after the breakdown, but after it hangs there's
a noticable delay before setserial returns the port info. Other than that
I'm completely lost.

Any ideas? I can't find anything in FAQs or list archives.

TIA,
Robin.
