Mozilla 1.0.1 mail setting deflt to fixed width

How do you change the message composition font option to be Fixed Width 
instead of Variable Width by default?  In newer versions of mozilla this 
can be done in Edit -> Prefs -> Compostion -> Defaults for HTML 
Messages.  This is not on Mozilla 1.0.1.

I haven't been able to find anything on this so far.  Thanks for your help.
