Through a little bit of testing, I was able to setup /etc/pam.d/ssh to use LDAP for authentication of users. Since then, my users can SSH to the box and log in correctly.
In addition to the resources that have been pointed out, I suggest you look at the "authconfig" application. It almost certainly would have saved you a bunch of time and effort.
