Take a look at the system logs (/var/log/messages) and the terminal output (if you start X from the commandline, in runlevel 3). This must have a lot of information that help you to fix problems..... sometimes much simple to solve. Hummm.... you don't need to run the xhost command in order to lock the screen, forget it... Try the "xscreensaver-demo -lock" command, in a x-terminal and check if the scrren locks.
