the scenario that you're in seems to lack further
info for us. nonetheless, have you set your environment
variable JAVA_HOME?

like: 

[EMAIL PROTECTED] xxx]$export JAVA_HOME=<installdir>/j2sdk-1.4.2-fcs

your <installdir> could probably reside under the /usr/java
directory.
