Hello all. If this is the wrong list then please let me know. I'm
pretty much a newbie, and I have RHL 5.0 installed on my intel machine.
I was using just fine the other day, meaning that everything was working
and I could dial into my ISP as I usually do. Then all of a sudden I
realized that when I sent people mail using the Netscape communicator
email client, all they would get was a blank message from me. (I always
use Netscape to do email... I download incoming from my ISP's POP3
server and store it locally, and I guess I use SMTP to send... Netscape
defaults.) I don't think that I could send mail using sendmail either.
Then, I went out of Linux, and when I came back and tried to use the
default RHL startx to get into X, it wouldn't let me. It started to go
in but it hanged before it actually popped any xterms up. I was able to
get into X buy just typing "xinit" and then starting a window manager
once X itself started. Still couldn't send mail.
Then, I noticed that the root user was getting mail from the Cron
Daemon whenever I tried to send anybody mail. I've included one of
these Cron emails at the bottom of the message. I looked at this and
thought that maybe the problem was that Netscape was taking up too much
space on the disk with stored messages and cache, so I erased a bunch of
the messages and cleared out the cache. After doing this, I found I was
able to use startx to go into X, but I still couldn't send mail. I can
still connect to my ISP fine and I can surf around the web.
Okay, enough, here's one of the emails from the Cron Daemon to root

Subject: Cron <root@localhost> run-parts /etc/cron.hourly
Can't write PID to "/var/lock/news/shlock1533", No space left on device

All the other emails said the same thing, except that the numbers
tailing "shlock" were different. I looked in my /var/lock/news/
directory and it's completely empty.
If anyone knows what the problem is and how to fix it, I'd be
eternally grateful. Thanks in advance.
