 I didn't find anything explicit on athlons, but after searching a little 
further I found out the above statement of mine is not true. It seems the 
first references I found on the subject are not entirely accurate.

 Intel only advices people to use cpu's with identical steppings if 
possible, since this are the only combinations they test, but also state it 
should be possible to use cpu's with different steppings (see 
http://www.intel.com/support/processors/pentiumiii/intnotes.htm##Mixed%20Pro
cessor%20Steppings). If somebody has such a reference about athlon dual 
systems please send it back.
