Depends on context. It's often very nice to have "filesystem" access to stuff (every operation is just normal "open file, read" stuff instead of arbitrary and weird API calls). And NFS does that fairly well. Why not tell us a bit more about the problem context? Presumably you have some reason for not wanting NFS or find it cumbersome somehow. What are they?
