You can use nmap to scan the machine to see if port 21 is open or, or telnet
to port 21:  

telnet yourdomin.com 21

You should get a response like:

Trying xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx...
Connected to ftp.yourdomain.com
Escape character is '^]'.
220 ProFTPD FTP Server ready.
