Random crashes/system hang on high load

I'm experiencing some serious instabilities on my machine right now. I 
will get arbitrary core dumps, an sometimes a complete lock-up of the 
host, when the system load is high. The processes that load the system 
are typically *not* the first ones to crash; applications like the GNOME 
panel, window manager etc. are more likely to go down. It may look like 
the problems start occurring as and when the CPU usage reaches 100%.

I'm running Red Hat Linux 9 with kernel-2.4.20-20.9 right now, but I 
think I have seen this with other releases, too. Possibly related syslog 
messages:

Note: The memory is not full when this  happens, at least not according 
to gnome-system-monitor.
