As an alternative to exploring 'runlevel' you can press "Ctrl-alt-F2" or F3, F1, or whatever, log in as root, and then do a:
killall X
startx
This ought to clear things up in many cases. Other thing, you should make sure you;re not running X as root, dangerous things can happen.

It's rarely necessary to shutdown/reboot your system, even for something like
the kids sabotaging the hardware (unless they pull the plug or hit the off
switch!).  Try looking up "runlevel" (man, etc.) and set your runlevel back
down to '3' - command line.  Then just type "startx" to restart the X server,
and you should be back in business - without a reboot.
