I don't have experience with Linux on these systems, but do have experience with {ok now don't laugh} NT, they are stable systems, the onboard SCSI is a very well covered Adaptec, if you go to Compaqs forum they will tell you the exact chipset. Actually the only problem I have with them is Compaq Calling them "Rack Mount", by this they mean they will give you two angle bars that you can slide the box in on. So when you need to do work, you get to unplug all the connections, pull the entire unit out, take it to a work surface and do the work and then return it to the rack. We currently have 6 of them, and from now on will be buying the 2500R, a little bit more money but a true rack mount if that is what you are looking for. Just for comparison the systems were setup from ground zero to NT domain in lest than 3 hours for all 6. Hope this helps a little. We are considering some Compaq Prolinea 850R servers to run Redhat 5.0 for web/mail/news servers. Has anyone had any experience with these servers under Linux, good or bad? My main concerns are compatibility with the ethernet and SCSI controllers in the Compaq server. Compaq does a good job of disguising normal brand-name chipsets with their own names, none of which are listed on the hardware compatibility listing. Some of the machines will probably have 2 Pentium Pro CPU's in them, so SMP compatibility/performance is a factor as well. I would appreciate any feedback anyone may have on these machines. They appear to be quite resonably priced at the moment, and they only take 3 rack spaces which is a nice feature as well. Thanks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- W. Bryan Caudle President Commonwealth Technical Services, Inc.
