I' don't remember well,
but I think i've got the same error upon fresh installation:
did you have a X-link in /etc/X11 pointing to your server?,
as in this ll output:
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  root  24 Apr 23 12:07 X ->
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA*
replace XF86_SVGA with your server, if you have not the link
just:
ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_XXXX /etc/X11/X
