I recently spent almost three weeks attempting to get a HP 855c working ! I have used RH 4.2, 5.0, 5.2,6.0 and Linux-Mandrake 6.0 with never a problem in setting up and configuring this same printer. Though I have always ended up using the 5xx series filters. Be that as it may, My most recent bout with both Rh 6.1 and L-M 6.1 have convinced me more care needs to be taken in making this basic service a little more "bullet proof" from the start especially considering the importance of a functioning printer "from the start". So after many queries and feedback from others around the world with similiar problems what finally seemed to have cured the erratic behavior of my paticular printer was the following: In L-M conf.modules there is a default 'alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc' so I didn't need to add that. That did not help my paticular problem however, it took adding at the end of: /etc/rc.d/rc.local /sbin/modprobe parport /sbin/modprobe parport_pc /sbin/modprobe lp Previously with and without the "upgrade" even doing an 'rm -f -r /var/spool/lpd/lp' and deleting the previous entry in 'printtool' I could not add a printer as it would give me an error '/dev/lp0 not detected' However upon rebooting then 'printtool' again 'add printer' it would lock up, so; quit 'printtool' open up 'printtool' and 'add printer' again without rebooting and lo and behold; /dev/lp0 was detected and I could add my printer. However a couple hours later ; it was gone again 'lpc' gave the same 'no daemon present'; 'lpd status' would show multiple lpd's running! killing them off would do no good, '/dev/lp0 not detected' etc. Someone even suggested compiling the process into the kernel instesad of modules but after 4 years of successful module use with printers I was not convinced. So to make a short story long reading some of the "Printer Problems" here prompted this post. Maybe my solution can help someone else? Or at the very least If anyone could give an understandable reason why these things occured it would be nice to know. I still am troubled by the fact that something as basic as printing in these new releases of Red Hat rpms are giving many people trouble.
