There are several ways of doing this...

Roottail was one that attempted this, but is more commonly replaced by using
Eterm.

Eterm has an option which permits it to "display" the desktop background in
the Eterm itself.

Using the command line switches, you can disable all borders & menus leaving
you with an xterm on the desktop... in which you can in turn run your
apps...
