Interesting.  I've never had a WD drive fail, except for one I killed
(static shock, killed the other drive, too).  They are the only
manufacturer I know of, aside from IBM, which has a 5 year drive
warranty--everyone else seems to have a 3 year warranty.  If I want fast 
drives, I buy Seagate Barracudas.  If I want reliable drives, I buy WD or 
IBM.  (fast, reliable: IBM.)
