scanner q

I am aware from reading the list that a program 
called SANE supports scanners.  The Q: does it
support SCSI and/or parallel port scanners?  I
could run either, but the parallels are quite a
bit cheaper.  Is there a cut-off version of the
kernel before which scanners won't run?  I'm
thinking seriously of going back to Mandrake 5.3,
whatever kernel that had.  It was less of a hassle.
