the man page mentions a booby trap for hosts.deny:
/etc/hosts.deny:
in.tftpd: ALL: (/some/where/safe_finger -l @%h | \
       /usr/ucb/mail -s %d-%h root) &

If given valid paths for safe_finger and mail, /usr/sbin/tcpdchk still returns:
error: /etc/hosts.deny, line 10: bad option name: "("

any ideas on getting this booby trap to work?
