I have a Toshiba Portege 3025CT which ran RH 5.2 perfectly. To keep the
distributions uniform among all machines, I upgraded it to 6.0, then 6.1.
Now I'm having problems with apmd and nfsd.
It used to be that only when the battery had about 2-3 minutes of power
left did the machine quietly beep at me to tell me I had to shutdown and
recharge the battery. Now, however, when the battery reaches about 51% of a
full charge, I get messages (accompanied by a loud beep) splashed across the
screen: battery is getting low. This repeats several times a minute, and
occurs regardless of whether I'm working on a console or a vc in X.
I've tried to set messages off, but that doesn't stop it. It's very
annoying and frustrating -- especially when I'm in a meeting.
Since this appears to be a new "feature" in 6.0, I'd sure like to learn
how to turn it off!
Another PITA showed up on a trip a couple of weeks ago: a warning that the
network was unreachable. That, of course, was the case because I was not
connected to the network. Again, this never occurred under 5.2.
I'd greatly appreciate a solution to these two problems this weekend as I
have meetings next week at which I'd like to use a well-behaved notebook.
Thanks in advance,
Rich
