Your monitor configuration is present in /etc/X11/XF86Config file.
The section dealing with monitors is in the "Screen Section"
In the "Colour svga server section" and the "accelerated server section",
the
resolution 1024 x 768 will be present. Just delete this and add "800 x
600", if
that is not already present. This should do the job.

        Another method is to toggle between different resolutions using
Ctrl + Alt + + (Control-Alt-Plus) keys. This will toggle between the
different
resolutions mentioned in your XF86Config file.

        As for changing the font, it is available in the 'Options' menu.
