this is history by now. RH 6.1 does have problems with this card ( we're
not talking about rh 5.2).
After turning off pnp on the NIC, the only way I could get it to work is
re-install rh 6.1.

Linux definitely supports the 3c509B - I'm using it under RHL 5.2 and it
works fine. One question, though: I remember the DOS setup program for
the 509b telling me something about having to do a hard reset after
switching PnP off - did you do that? Other than that, I simply selected
the IRQ and the right transceiver (did you check that? "auto" doesn't
work for Linux, AFAIK) and it worked.
