Rob,

Thanks for the response.  I wasn't sure what had changed on my system that 
broke netscape, but when you mentioned XFree86 updates, that sounded like a 
viable culprit on my system.  I backed up from a Mandrake version of 3.3.5 and 
installed 3.3.5-3 from Redhat, and sure enough, the problem went away.
