First, I'd highly recommend to LaTeX book (Lamport) and "The LaTeX Companion" 
(Gossens, Mittelbach, ...).  They can probably answer most of your questions.

Another good resource is the comp.text.tex newsgroup (querying "latex" and 
"underline" on www.deja.com will generate numerous hits in this group).
