Anyone wanna take a shot at explaining PPP to a newbie?

Here's what I've got now:
        I connect COM1 on laptop to /dev/ttyS0 on server via null modem cable and
I get a login prompt.

What I'd like to have:
        Attach a modem to /dev/ttyS0 and get a PPP connection when I dial up the
modem.  

Can anyone explain to me what I need to do to accomplish this?
