I am currently logged into my system via a serial port because the X display
has frozen.

I am, was :-) running OpenWindows. I took one of the Xterm windows and
stretched out out wide, so that when I run tcpdump, the lines don't wrap.
But, as soon as the text in the xterm hit the bottom of the window, it displayed
a few rows of pixels turds along the bottom and froze. It was fine if I left
the Xterm at 80x24.

I've killed off all of the processes pertaining to tty2 (the one I was running
from), but that hasn't released the display.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is a problem with my display card, as any
output to a wide display area causes the lockup. I was running StarOffice
when it did the same thing when I opened a web page to edit it.

In any event, is there any kind of command that can be used to reset the
display card, short of rebooting? There are a lot of people downloading from
my server and I'd hate to have to make them start over.

Looks like I'll have to put in a different display card and see what happens.
