Ok, I got a bit of time over the weekend to try it, so I can now answer
my own question:

Answer: It doesn't work. Interestingly enough, most of the install seems
to work - the main problem appears to be the different rpm versions used
in 5.2 and 6.0, as I got several error messages with regard to rpmrc and
the RPM database. The latter caused the install to fail.

Fortunately, on third try, I got the updated RHL 5.2 boot.img to boot on
that machine, so I have 5.2 running. I was quite impressed - minimal
install (no X, no devel, no gcc/egcs - only all that's necessary to do
PPP, masquerading, ssh and a bit of mail maybe) in ~120MB.
I also compiled a monolithic 2.0.38 kernel which is a good bit smaller
than the default one - cuts down on memory footprint and boot-up time...
