I just downloaded the RH6.1 iso image and mounted it through the loopback device.
Mount lists it as RW:

# mount
/dev/sda1 on / type ext2 (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw)
/dev/sda3 on /tmp type ext2 (rw)
/dev/sda6 on /u01 type ext2 (rw)
/dev/sda7 on /u02 type ext2 (rw)
/dev/sda8 on /u03 type ext2 (rw)
/dev/sda2 on /usr type ext2 (rw)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=0622)
/dev/scd0 on /mnt/cdrom type iso9660 (ro)
/u03/tmp/6.1-i386.iso on /u03/mnt type iso9660 (rw,loop=/dev/loop0)
#

I'm scared to try writing to it in case the image gets messed up before I burn it.

If I try writing to it to update a few packages, will the image file be in good
shape for making a CD?

Thanks
