I had this, and fixed it by finding the part of the XF86Config (I think)
file which refers to the mouse (Pointer section), and changing the line
about the Protocol to IMPS/2 instead of PS/2, or vice-versa. Some people
have also spoken about turning off gpm with gpm -k although I haven't done
this. A search of Deja.com might turn up more advice.

I'm afraid I don't know what the underlying cause of the problem is!
