i'm running out of ideas trying to get my pcmcia
modem to work. i'm working with the downloaded tar ball
of linux-2.2.13, and pcmcia-3.1.8. built, installed
and the network card works just fine. however, no luck
getting the modem card to work (28.8K new media net surfer).

when i try to bring up ppp (with "ifup ppp0"), while
this worked under the stock red hat 6.1 install, what i
get in /var/log/messages is:

Dec 28 19:54:37 dell ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/modem at 115200
Dec 28 19:54:37 dell modprobe: can't locate module char-major-108
Dec 28 19:54:37 dell pppd[1134]: pppd 2.3.10 started by root, uid 0
Dec 28 19:54:38 dell chat[1143]: Can't get terminal parameters: Input/output error
Dec 28 19:54:38 dell pppd[1134]: Connect script failed
Dec 28 19:54:39 dell pppd[1134]: Exit.
Dec 28 19:54:41 dell modprobe: can't locate module char-major-108
Dec 28 19:54:41 dell ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/modem at 115200

Dec 28 19:54:43 dell ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/modem at 115200

  ... repeatedly.

as a test, i popped out the card and re-inserted it, just to
see what cardmgr had to say, which was:

Dec 28 19:55:18 dell kernel: tty01 unloaded
Dec 28 19:55:18 dell cardmgr[346]: shutting down socket 1
Dec 28 19:55:18 dell cardmgr[346]: executing: './serial stop ttyS1'
Dec 28 19:55:18 dell cardmgr[346]: executing: 'rmmod serial_cs'
Dec 28 19:55:25 dell cardmgr[346]: initializing socket 1
Dec 28 19:55:25 dell cardmgr[346]: socket 1: Serial or Modem
Dec 28 19:55:25 dell cardmgr[346]: executing: 'insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.13/pcmcia/serial_cs.o'
Dec 28 19:55:25 dell kernel: tty01 at 0x13f8 (irq = 9) is a 16550A
Dec 28 19:55:25 dell cardmgr[346]: executing: './serial start ttyS1'

as i said, all of this worked fine using stock red hat 6.1, but
upgrading the kernel and pcmcia package broke something. i'm open
to any suggestions. thanks.

rday

p.s. it's a dell inspiron 7500, if that mekes any difference.
