Just a couple of ideas - Do you have a rc.serial file in /etc/rc.d,
and is it set up to initialize the 8 port card?  (rc.serial is called
from rc.sysinit)  If memory serves me correctly, only ttyS0 and ttyS1
are initialized in the stock setup.
