I followed the earlier suggestion of checking my BIOS port settings, and
sure enough, they were set to "auto".  Selecting the fixed value solved the
problem, but I still had to add the "alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc" line
to /etc/conf.modules.

For what it's worth, I cured this problem on my Thinkpad by resetting the
printer irq to 7 (it was 10 for some reason). I believe RH hardwires the
printer to irq7 and you can only change it with either boot options or
conf.modules.
