To follow up my question : if I provide M3 with the IP address of M2
it works. (the other way around would need some port formarding from the firewall).

So it looks like netbios encapsulated tcp/ip.

now, the point is machine M1 knows about the 2 networks and I think, yes,
a wins server could do it. 

so now the next question: how can I setup my samba server to be a wins server ??

I don't know anything about netbios protocol and on the top of it, it looks like this 
wins server will have to deal with IP address, no ?
