My usual recovery for people who have done this is:
1) restart computer and get the LILO prompt:
2) type: linux init=/bin/sh
3) after a short boot you get a # prompt
4) mount -o rw,remount /
5) passwd root (enter in your new root password)
6) sync
7) reboot - or just power off (not great)
