FOR THE TWO STEPHENS!

Use the following function in your script:

pppisup(){
  [ "`/sbin/route -n|/bin/grep -E '^0.0.0.0.*ppp'`" ]

pppisup holds true if the link is up.

Easy eh? Pilfered it from someone's domail script.
