Xvideo res

Can anyone help me determine why I can't get the same resolution in
Xwindows that I get in Win95? I have read all the manpages and docs I
could find and checked all the settings with no joy.

My setup is:

    Card:        Trident 8900D (8900 cl/d)
    Monitor    MGC multisync  Model MGC-1488    47-63 Hz
    OS:          Red Hat 6.2
