Most motherboards should work. I have had good luck with Asus. I also
have a Micro-Star K7 board that runs Linux fine. (The kernel doesn't know
about some of the AMD support chips, but the generic drivers work.)

The 386 should be plenty for a home firewall/print server, depending on
how fast your Internet connection is, and how much printing you do. But
do you realy want your firewall to also be a print server?

Use 6.2 - ipchains is nicer for setting up a firewall them ipfwadm.
(Or use lrp or one of the firewall distributions...)
