the oss worked. only if gnome sounds are to be enabled soundon has to be
enabled before doing startx.

try http://www.opensound.com and try using OSS
It costs about $30 to register it, but you can try it, see if it works
finding your card and you can always use the parameters it uses to try
sndconfig again. Or... just pay the few dollars, have sound work and
just enjoy. I paid the fee about 4 years ago and I've been able to
upgrade for free dozens of times since.
