Freshly installed FTP server not asking for username, password

Hi all,   When I try to FTP to my new RedHat Server .. I get a 'connected to.. 192.168.1.254' message, but i do not get prompted for the username or passwd   I have queried wu-ftpd and anonftp through Gnorpm .. there appear to be no verification problems..   What could be the problem ?   Anurag
