Thanks Hal that did it. BTW there is some verbage in the less man page I
quote:
If neither LESSCHARSET nor LESSCHARDEF is set, but your system
supports
the setlocale interface, less will use setlocale to determine the
char�
acter set. setlocale is controlled by setting the LANG or
LC_CTYPE
environment variables.
man -k LANG returned nothing that looked applicable so for right now the
export LESSCHARDEF=. works great.
