I don't think that you need to do some back up, because the second linux
box is under the same architecture right ? I think just recompile the
kernel with 686 support is enough, to make your linux box run faster under
P III - 600.
Anyway if your linux box doesn't show up the original memory at your new
linux box, try to put at /etc/lilo.conf
append=mem"xxx mb"
and don't forget to run lilo
