I wondered how clear that was. Let me try again.

With linux as the remote machine, VNC gives the remote user a server
environment seperate from what ever else is going on on the machine. An
entirely seperate display. Mouse, and keyboard io do not affect what a
concurrent user sitting at the console is doing. In windows, a user at the
machine and the remote user running vnc will share the same display. You
will fight over control of the mouse, keystrokes can be entered from either
place etc. Both users are looking at (using) the exact same display, the one
viewed by looking at the monitor attached to the remote machine . It is very
much like I imagine pc anywhere works where the remote user can takeover what
is happening in a kind of collaborative use of the screen.

As far as I can tell there is no way in X to view the same display like what
happens in windows. I just thought I would mention it. I believe that vnc
will behave as you expect with linux as the remote machine.

I know I am not using the correct terms and using screen and display
enterchangably. The problem is that the terms do not apply in the windows
domain. I hope I have not confused the issue with my poor explanation.

There is some stuff in the FAQ about security including some info on using it
through a ssh tunnel take a look at
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/sshvnc.html
I may do this myself. The FAQ does say that the password authentification
portion is encrypted so at least you don't have to worry about someone
sniffing your password.
