I don't know if this is what you want to do or not, but look into the 
lastb command. I am not on linux now so I am not sure of the exact 
command, but if I remember correctly if the file btmp exists in 
your /var/log directory the system will automatically fill it with 
the failed logins. The command lastb reads this log file.

Again I am not exactly sure about the file you have to create, but 
the man page should tell you (if I remember correctly so does the 
lastb command if the file it requires does not exist).
