"Meta key" is a legacy term.  Next time you're at the Smithsonian Sci &
Tech in DC take a look at the old computers, especially the keyboards.  On
one or another of them you'll find a keyboard with a Meta key on them.
Today on a PC keyboard the Alt key is generally configured to represent
the Meta key.
